UK sets out headline positions on future trading relationship with the EU: In a written statement to parliament and a speech in Greenwich, Prime Minister has set out his vision for a future free trade agreement with the EU.

The Prime Minister has flatly rejected any Regulatory alignment or role for the European Court of Justice or any supranational institutional controls of borders or immigration policy. The Prime Minister has indicated that the UK will maintain its own system of sanitary and phytosanitary controls.

The Prime Minister has rejected any need for agreement going beyond what is typically in a free trade agreement on competition policy, state subsidies, environment, climate change, labour or tax - highlighting areas where the UK’s performance would suggest the UK might have reason to be more worried about EU standards than the other way round.

EU Commission sends negotiating position to EU Council for approval: The EU Commission has published a detailed negotiating mandate and accompanying Q&A.  The Negotiating mandate published as a ‘Decision’ has been sent to the EU Council for approval by 25 February with a view to negotiations commencing in March. The EU describes its aim as being to try to secure a high-ambition trade deal, with zero tariffs and zero quotas on all goods entering our single market, conditional on robust level playing field safeguards to avoid unfair competitive advantages the UK could derive from regulatory divergence (lowering of standards) or subsidisation of UK operators.
