Steffan Groch, head of regulatory and partner at national business law firm DWF, has been reappointed as Chair of the UK Health and Safety Lawyers’ Association (HSLA) following the recent AGM. His second, two-year term commenced in November 2014.
The Health and Safety Lawyers’ Association, which has over 500 members comprising solicitors, barristers, prosecution and defense, is a national organisation aimed at practitioners and academic lawyers who have an interest in encouraging the development of health and safety law. Steffan has been a member of the HLSA since it was formed and, in his first term as Chair, led the initiative to utilise the group’s budget to hold more events and increase the online technical resources available to members.
Steffan has been at DWF for 14 years, where he works on a national basis providing expertise in health and safety regulation, employers, public liability, compliance training and audits across the construction and infrastructure, insurance and road haulage and logistics sector teams. His reappointment as Chair of the HSLA follows the recent consultation on sentencing guidelines, which will significantly increase health and safety fines.
Commenting on his reappointment, Steffan said: “It’s been a great first year as Chair of the committee and I’m honoured to have once again been voted in by my peers. The HSLA is immensely important in ensuring that there is access to quality events, training and support for members, and I look forward to continuing to work closely with the rest of the committee and members to give the HSLA a strong voice in shaping future legislation.”
Steffan also acts as a legal adviser on the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health’s construction committee and, in his role at DWF, leads the firm’s Crisis Response Service, which provides clients with comprehensive support to help protect their business and reputation during a crisis. The service recently won the ‘Law Firm Innovation Award’ at the 2014 British Legal Awards.
