National legal business DWF has appointed Glenn Sharpe as the firm’s new National Head of Planning, marking the next phase of growth for the firm’s 190-strong national real estate team. Glenn will be based in DWF’s Leeds office where he will help develop the firm’s planning expertise both in the northeast and nationally. Glenn joins from DLA Piper where he was a partner and head of planning.
Glenn brings extensive experience across both the public and private sectors; as a former senior local government lawyer, he has strong connections across the public sector and previously led the planning and environmental team at North Yorkshire County Council. Since moving into the private sector, his practice has focused on energy, waste, retail and residential developments. He is widely recognised as an expert in the oil and gas sector and in particular, the intersection between key issues in the renewable energy and aviation fields.
His work in the oil and gas industry has led to engagement on a significant number of projects in the Scottish market, including the representation of clients at public inquiries, the negotiation and drafting of Section 75 Agreements, liaison with the Scottish Government and the instruction of Scottish Advocates. Other recent projects include securing planning permission for the development of a gas field, processing plant, pipelines and associated infrastructure in North Yorkshire; advising National Air Traffic Services in relation to aviation impact issues arising from windfarm developments in England and Scotland; and advising Liverpool Airport on planning and highways issues.
Glenn commented: “The scale and scope of DWF’s offering, its geographical coverage and recent investment in a diverse range of expertise within the wider real estate team provide a strong platform on which to develop further opportunities across the sector. I look forward to working with the team to develop this capability and offer a greater range of services to the firm’s national client base.”
Toby Askin, who was appointed DWF’s National Head of Real Estate in March 2015, commented: “We're pleased to welcome Glenn into our growing real restate practice and are confident that his commercial awareness and leadership capability will allow him to help build our profile in the market and provide strategic direction to our planning team as we continue to invest in this area.”
Over the last 12 months DWF’s real estate team has seen considerable investment particularly around the recruitment of senior partners across all regions, including partner Abby Dry from Hill Dickinson in Liverpool, director Chris Henshaw from Eversheds in Manchester, planning partner Moray Thomson from MacRoberts in Glasgow and City partners Chris Seel and Nicola Giddens from Stephenson Harwood. Associate Lucy Jackson from SGH Martineau and Solicitor Ellen Roberts from Fodens Solictors also recently joined.
