Strategic hire for DWF Germany as financial services partner joins Cologne team

Leading legal business DWF has appointed partner Dr. Wolfgang Richter to its financial services team where he will be based in the firm’s Cologne office.

Wolfgang joins from Abadi & Co Global Markets where he was a managing director and the firm’s European Representative in Berlin, handling investment banking and finance deals. He was formally Head of the Finance Group at DLA Piper and led the firm’s Berlin office for six years.

Wolfgang has over 20 years’ experience handling financial matters for clients, including M&A finance, securitisations, real estate transactions, non-performing loan deals and national and international finance restructuring with a particular focus on refinancing advice for financial institutions and advising on product development and strategy. Wolfgang also specialises in FinTech and will complement the firm’s national and international tech experts’ capabilities and further develop the strength of DWF’s technology sector.

The appointment enhances DWF’s international offering and strengthens the firm’s financial services practice in Germany, enhancing the local client service delivered to companies expanding into the country, domestic companies looking to expand or invest abroad and for clients with any commercial interests in the region generally.

Wolfgang comments on his appointment: “The financial services sector is being carefully monitored and will continue to be as Britain negotiates its exit from the EU. DWF’s financial services practice is well placed to advise its national and international client base from both the UK and Germany and I’m looking forward to working with the firm’s experts as we all monitor the changing economic situation.”

DWF’s National Head of Financial Services, Richard Tall, says: “DWF’s financial services team advises a number of financial institutions, including specialist investment banks, public and private companies, private equity funds, management teams and shareholders and Wolfgang’s appointment will increase our international capability for our clients. Brexit will almost certainly induce change in the sector and present challenges for businesses, but also opportunities, so it’s more important than ever for legal businesses to provide strong advice in this area from both the UK and in Europe and deliver clients the required stability in a time of uncertainty.”

In January 2016 DWF merged with commercial law and tax specialists BridgehouseLaw to strengthen its international capability, giving the firm two new offices in Cologne and Munich in addition to its other international locations in Dublin, Dubai and Brussels. The merger was driven by client demand and is enhancing DWF’s existing MENA offering and strengthening the firm’s core sectors, including energy & industrials, real estate, retail, food & hospitality and technology.

Alongside the merger with BridgehouseLaw, DWF is continuing to invest in its international capability, including appointing Munich-based tax partner Andreas Panzer from Beiten Burkhardt, launching a corporate practice in Dublin with partner Ross Little’s appointment from William Fry, merging with niche insurance law firm Fox Hartley in May which is enhancing the firm’s international litigation and arbitration practice and appointing director Faisal Attia to the firm’s construction team in Dubai from Tamimi & Company, strengthening the firm’s international real estate capability in key markets.
