Devolving powers and Sunday Trading

  • In a flurry of activity on devolving powers BIS and the Department for Communities and Local Government have launched a consultation on devolving powers to relax Sunday trading rules to elected Mayors and/or Local Authorities – Closing Date 16 September.
  • The Association of Convenience Stores is actively opposing the move.
  • DCLG has also issued a press release on discussions re devolving powers to the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership as allocation of £5Bn to LEP’S for spending on business support.

Test purchasing returns

A major test purchasing exercise for cigarettes using under 18 year olds (funded by Department of Health) involving 352 test purchases by 48 Trading Standards Departments - has reported a failure rate of 18%.

ASA complaints upheld

The ASA has upheld complaints in respect of unrepresentative price comparisons (Scope Opthalmics)

Meat industry guide published

The Food Standards Agency has published a comprehensive guide of 20 chapters on food safety aimed at the meat sector which will merit careful study.

2015/1362 - Permitting the use of silicon dioxide in rosemary extract.
