I specialise in health and safety, food and product safety, environmental and regulatory matters, corporate manslaughter, contaminated land and planning enforcement.
I have over 20 years’ experience in this area, including holding various roles as a prosecutor for local authorities and environmental bodies. This allows me to provide my clients with a specialist insight into the enforcement techniques adopted by regulators and the most appropriate methods to take to ensure the best chance of avoiding a prosecution.
My clients range from multinational companies to one-man bands and often come from the construction, food and retail sectors. I recently advised on one of the few prosecutions that have, so far, been brought for corporate manslaughter.
Chambers and Partners (2014) said “Gary Smith is a well-known regulatory specialist. He acted on the Lion Steel corporate manslaughter prosecution matter and is praised as a highly diligent professional, with interviewees saying ‘… he is a very sound health and safety lawyer’ and ‘technically great’.”
